Spelling Funetically

Well, the first day of state standardized testing is here and there has already been a bit of a snag. You know that bubbling in thing that the kids do at the beginning of the test, right? It's where they fill-in their sex, birth date and name. Ah yes, the name.

One of my students I am proctoring has the moniker, La-a. That’s pronounced Ladasha, by the way--LaDASHa. How do you bubble that? Is this the future of names? Handles that look as if they have been censored for content? I wouldn’t be surprised if in the couple of years that I’m going to see names like F&*ck on my roll sheet!

That’s pronounced, Fampersandstarck, by the way.
