Speak Out

We have a Gay Student Union, and they’re planning a day of silence to bring awareness. To what I’m not sure because Hammer’s e-mail didn’t go into that detail. This is what I do know:

They will be wearing all black.

That whole no talking thing…

They’ve been given an area to sit in during lunch.

Great—nothing says acceptance like segregation. Actually, I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. It’s great that a bunch of kids can ban together and make such a statement about tolerance. Again, due to lack of information, I assume that’s what this whole thing about.

On the other hand, I’m a bit edgy about the fact that we’ve put them all in one place, surrounded by a bunch of homophobic predators--unless the kids calling each other gaywad is the new daddio. I don’t think so though because “Shut up before I beat your ass, daddio” just doesn’t make sense.

Who knows? This may be the first step in a new direction. These kids, sitting together, protected from those who would mock and harass them may lead to others being able to sit without fear.
